A scarred duke walks the road disguised
Two travelers trudge along a hot, dusty road. One is tall, scarred and dressed in motley, with a fool's cap and bells. The other is Sir Pertinax of Shene, a bony knight who curses the heat, the dust and the lack of beer.
The jester is Duke Jocelyn. At a shady brook he explains that he has long dreamed of Yolande, yet he has met her only through visors and tournaments. He fears that his scars would frighten her, so he will not ride up with banners and men-at-arms. Pertinax insists that rank and wealth win any woman, but Jocelyn says his friend knows little of women's hearts.
Then four rascals leap from the thicket. One of them, the outlaw Robin, sings a cheeky song, is paid five gold pieces and goes free. It is a small scene, yet it shows that mercy will be repaid before the book is done.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about Die Geste von Herzog Jocelyn
What is The Geste of Duke Jocelyn about?
It follows a scarred duke who disguises himself as a jester to win the lady Yolande. On the road he meets outlaws, a witch, a rhyming dwarf and a runaway duchess, and he wins friends by mercy and wit.
Why does Gillian keep interrupting the story?
Farnol wrote the tale for his daughter, so she appears as a character who comments, objects and gives orders. Her chatter makes the telling playful and lets the author joke about what readers want.
What is the Crystal Heart?
It is a jewel with a crowned heart inside a crystal heart. A rhyme says that whoever takes it takes all, and those who know it obey its holder, which matters in the dungeon at Canalise.
Is the Geste written in verse or prose?
It mixes both. Farnol begins in rhyme, shifts to blank verse and prose when his daughter asks, and returns to rhyme for songs. The mix of styles keeps the book lively to hear.
Who are Robin and Lobkyn Lollo?
Robin is a cheerful outlaw who becomes the duke's friend after a spared life. Lobkyn Lollo is a strong, humpbacked dwarf who speaks in rhyme and obeys his witch grandmother.
