Für wen es gedacht ist

For readers who love travel writing with an argument in it, and anyone curious about America around 1900 as an outsider saw it, from its cities and politics to its labour disputes and racial divide.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

The Future in America is a book of travel and reflection by H. G. Wells, published in 1906 after a visit to the United States. Wells was already well known for his scientific romances and for essays that tried to forecast how society would change. Here he turns that habit of mind on a single country and asks what it is likely to become.

He does not write a guidebook. He looks at cities, money, politics, labour and race, and he asks what these things say about the direction of the nation. You get the view of a sharp English observer who admires the energy he sees and worries about its lack of plan. The first key point is the question that drives the whole book: how do you judge a country by its future rather than its past?

Punkt 1 von 4

A visitor asks where America is heading

Wells comes to America in 1906 with a particular habit. In his fiction and in books such as Anticipations, he had tried to reason from present trends to future shapes of society. He brings that habit to the trip, and the book is built around forecasting more than around description.

He is aware that many travellers before him had written about American manners and had stopped there. Wells wants to look beneath manners at the forces that are moving the country. He asks what its people believe about themselves, and whether those beliefs are enough for the tasks ahead.

This gives the book its restless tone. Each scene, from a crowded street to a conversation with a public figure, is treated as evidence. For the reader, the pleasure lies in watching a trained thinker turn everyday sights into questions about what comes next.

That’s 1 of 4 key points.
