A hated rival begs for help

The story opens in Nat Ridley's private office above Times Square. A telephone call has left him puzzled. Carl Lemberg, the biggest rival in New York's private detective trade, wants to see him at once. Nat's assistant Berry Todd finds this very funny, and warns his chief that Lemberg is a snake in the grass. Nat dislikes the man too, yet he agrees to listen.

Lemberg arrives pale, trembling and glancing over his shoulder. This big, loud man is terrified. He tells Nat that his brother Henry and his uncle August were murdered, each with a dagger through the heart. Then his best operative, Dan Steele, an old friend of Nat's who once worked for him, met the same end in Paloma, Texas. Lemberg expects to be next.

The family owns oil wells near Rolamotaza in Mexico. They bought them from a group of Mexicans, who took their money and vanished. When the wells began to gush, the sellers came back and wanted a share, and threats followed. Each victim carried a grubby card with a drawing of a double dagger, fastened on with a tiny dagger used as a pin. Nat reaches for his books on secret societies, but Lemberg names the sign first. It belongs to the Tola, an old Mexican order thought to have died out.

Moved by the death of his friend, Nat takes the case. He sends Lemberg away by a hidden stairway and a freight entrance, and he sends the pin to a Columbia University professor to be tested. Then he visits Lemberg's office to read Steele's reports, which stop at the moment Steele goes to a secret meeting place. Hours later the office boy Toodles bursts in with a newspaper. The headline tells of a murder in a taxi, and the victim is Carl Lemberg.
