A stormy Saturday and a guest who never arrives
Richard Redfield, a law student, spends the evening in the Argyll house in the village of Blankville. Everyone waits for Henry Moreland, a banker's son engaged to Eleanor Argyll. She dresses with care and glows with happiness while rain pounds the windows.
The hours pass and Henry does not come. A train whistle cuts through the storm, and to Richard it sounds like a warning. Eleanor keeps glancing at her tiny watch. Her cousin James pounds the piano, and her young sister Mary teases everyone. Richard loves Eleanor in secret and hopes nobody notices.
Mr. Argyll tells everyone to begin tea. Afterward, Eleanor sends a servant to the post office in the rain, but he returns with no note. Richard lies awake for hours, shaken by the wind, feeling that something terrible is close. The quiet house gives no hint of what the night has hidden on the road outside.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
