Worum es in diesem Buch geht
The Car of Destiny is a romantic adventure by C. N. Williamson and A. M. Williamson, a husband and wife who wrote many travel novels together. It sends a young man across Spain in a red motorcar in the early days of motoring, when roads were rough and a drive from the French border to Seville was a daring trip. The story is told in the first person by the hero himself, so you share every hope and every fright.
The hero is Ramón Cristóbal, Marqués de Casa Triana, the son of a banished Carlist general. He is forbidden to enter Spain, yet he falls in love at first sight with an English girl, Lady Monica Vale, whom he glimpses in a car near Biarritz. Her mother wants her to marry the rich and ruthless Duke of Carmona, and the Duke is about to carry the girl south by car. Ramón follows in disguise, with an American friend and a faithful chauffeur.
You get a love story, a long chase, and a tour of Spanish towns, from Burgos and Madrid to Toledo, Córdoba and Seville. You also get Spanish customs, food, bells, processions and mountain passes, seen through the eyes of a man who has dreamed of his homeland since childhood. First, we begin in Biarritz, where one wish by the roadside changes a life.

A wish by the road at Biarritz
The story opens in Biarritz, where Ramón Cristóbal, Marqués de Casa Triana, has come by car from Paris with his American friend Dick Waring. Dick warns him that the young King of Spain is in town, visiting his English bride-to-be. A Casa Triana has good reason to stay away. Ramón's father was a Carlist general who fought for a rival claimant to the throne, and Ramón himself was jailed in Barcelona after a bomb was thrown on the day he arrived.
Ramón ignores the warning and takes an English name, Christopher Trevenna. He wants only a look at the King, so he follows the royal party's car along the Spanish road. He wishes that something would stop it, just as he once wished for apples to fall in an English orchard. The royal car stops, because its petrol tank has a leak, and Ramón offers a spare can.
Two fair girls lift their motor veils. One of them, to Ramón's mind, is as lovely as a saint in a window, and he falls in love in a single moment. He thinks she is the Princess, then learns from a shop photograph that she is not. She is Lady Monica Vale, daughter of the proud Lady Vale-Avon, and she is a friend of the Princess.
Ramón learns more from Dick's gossiping friends. Lady Vale-Avon is poor but ambitious, and she means her daughter to make a brilliant match. The man she has in mind is the Duke of Carmona, one of the richest nobles in Spain, whose family has been at odds with the Casa Trianas for generations. The two ladies are about to visit the Duke's mother in Seville.
Dick tells his friend plainly that his case is hopeless, and compares it to Romeo and Juliet. Ramón answers that Romeo won Juliet. He vows to cross any mountains between himself and the girl. So begins a plan to reach her at a masked ball.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.
