Für wen es gedacht ist

Readers who love American history and election drama will enjoy it, as will anyone drawn to Western landscapes, train journeys, warm humor, loyal friendships, and a romance that grows in the middle of a great public contest.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

The Candidate is a novel by Joseph A. Altsheler, who died in 1919. It follows a five month campaign for the American presidency, from a convention hall in early June to election night in November. The man at its center is Jimmy Grayson, a young Western lawyer nobody expected to be nominated. The story is seen through John Harley, a New York newspaper correspondent who joins the campaign train and stays to the end.

You travel with them by rail, carriage and horse across the plains and the Rocky Mountains. The book gives you speeches that hold crowds in a spell, small kindnesses that become turning points, and a quarrel inside the party that grows into a crisis. It also gives you a love story, set against an old promise that will not be easy to break.

The first key point opens on the night of the nomination, when Harley runs through the streets to bring Grayson the news before anyone else can.

Punkt 1 von 9

A dark horse wins the nomination

The story opens in a huge convention hall, where the voting has been scattered and aimless. Both parties have turned to the West, and the second party is looking for a Westerner of its own. A far-sighted old man from Grayson's state offers the name of James Madison Grayson, called Jimmy by his neighbors. He suggests it mildly, and that mildness keeps anyone from attacking it.

Grayson is young, tall and clean-shaven, with honest eyes and a gift for plain, graceful speech. He came to the convention only as a delegate, and he stayed in his hotel rooms with his wife as the custom required. At midnight the tide turns and the nomination becomes unanimous.

Harley, a correspondent just home from a war on the other side of the world, has felt this coming. He runs to the hotel, past a policeman who takes him for a thief, and brings the news himself. The committee arrives a few minutes later, and Harley watches Grayson rise to meet the weight of the moment.

Harley wires his editor to put him on the campaign, and the answer tells him to stay until election night. He has always looked eastward toward New York and Europe. Now he wonders whether the regions he thought lay in shadow have enough light after all.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
