Für wen es gedacht ist

For readers who love castaway tales, sea settings and lyrical romance, and who enjoy island atmosphere and stories of innocence, isolation and first love.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

The Blue Lagoon is a romance of the sea published in 1908 by H. De Vere Stacpoole, an Irish doctor who had worked as a ship's surgeon and knew the Pacific. It tells of two small children and an old sailor who are cast away on a tropical island, and of what becomes of the children as they grow up with no one else to teach them how to live.

The book gives you an island story, with reefs, fruit trees, storms and a quiet lagoon, and it asks a plain question. What is learned from society, and what comes from nature alone? Stacpoole writes in a lush, dreamy style, and he is as interested in how the island looks and feels as in what happens on it. Let us begin where the voyage begins, aboard a sailing ship in the South Pacific with two cousins and a sailor who looks after them.

A shipwreck leaves three survivors

The story opens on a sailing ship in the Pacific. Aboard are two young cousins, a boy named Dick and a girl named Emmeline, who are travelling with a family party. A fire breaks out on the ship, and the passengers and crew take to the boats in panic.

The children are placed in a boat under the care of Paddy Button, an elderly Irish sailor. Paddy is kind, fond of drink and full of sea lore and half-remembered stories. He is not a clever man, but he loves the children and takes the duty of caring for them seriously.

The boat drifts for days on the open water. The sea is wide and empty, and the children do not fully understand their danger. Paddy keeps them calm with talk and with the little food and water he can find.

This opening sets up the central situation. The children have lost their families, their homes and their world in a single night. They are left with one adult and a small boat, and everything that follows depends on that sailor and on the shore they might reach.
