Worum es in diesem Buch geht

The Bishop's Secret is a mystery novel by Fergus Hume, who also wrote The Mystery of a Hansom Cab. It is set in the quiet cathedral city of Beorminster, where a popular bishop seems to have everything: a fine palace, a devoted wife, a loyal flock and a family he adores.

The book mixes sharp comedy with real suspense. A stranger with a scar on his cheek calls at the palace during a grand reception, and the bishop falls ill within minutes. From that night, gossips, a scheming chaplain and a determined doctor all try to learn what the stranger wanted.

In this summary you will meet the people of the town, follow the clues the chaplain gathers, and see how a secret can bend every life around it. You will also learn what to watch for when you read. The story begins at a reception, with an unmarried visitor and the town's fiercest gossip riding together in a carriage.

A Cathedral City and Its Chorus

The story opens with Miss Daisy Norsham, a plain and shallow spinster, arriving in Beorminster to hunt for a husband. She stays with Mrs. Pansey, an archdeacon's widow who bullies the whole diocese with her memory and her tongue. Mrs. Pansey dresses in heavy black silk and a gauze turban, and she judges everyone she meets.

On the way to the bishop's reception, she gives Daisy a running account of local society. Bishop Pendle is a time-server in her view, and his wife is a white-faced doll. Their daughter Lucy is engaged to the wealthy Sir Harry Brace. The loveliest girl in town is Mab Arden, niece of the brisk Miss Whichello, and Mr. Cargrim, the bishop's chaplain, is a Jesuit in disguise.

The palace itself is a jumble of medieval towers and modern comforts. The guests are clergy, squires, officers and ladies in their best clothes. Dr. Graham, a bald and skeptical doctor, congratulates the bishop on his luck, then warns him that such good fortune never lasts. He tells him to throw his ring into the sea, as the old Greek tyrant Polycrates did.

The bishop brushes the warning aside, but the reader feels the weather turning. Mrs. Pansey then corners him about a public house called The Derby Winner, which she wants shut down. Before he can answer, a servant says a man is waiting who will not give his name and insists that it is a matter of life and death.
