Who is Don Rodrigo?

By the Library of Alexandria · 2 minute read · Updated 23. Okt 2026

In short

  • Don Rodrigo is the local nobleman who blocks a village wedding in Alessandro Manzoni's The Betrothed.
  • He wants Lucia Mondella and uses threats, hired men and powerful friends to pursue her.
  • His influence shows how fear can make the law powerless to protect ordinary people.

Who Don Rodrigo is

Don Rodrigo is a proud and spiteful nobleman in Lombardy, where rank gives him power over his neighbours. He does not rule a kingdom, but his servants and connections are enough to make others give way.

His hired men threaten Don Abbondio, the curate who is supposed to marry Renzo Tramaglino and Lucia Mondella. The frightened priest obeys, allowing Rodrigo's private wishes to interrupt the young couple's ordinary hopes.

What Don Rodrigo wants

Rodrigo sets his will on Lucia, driven partly by lust and partly by a wager with his cousin. He treats getting what he wants as something his position should allow.

When Fra Cristoforo asks him to leave Lucia in peace, Rodrigo answers with mockery and threats. The friar's appeal does not soften him, and he becomes more determined to pursue her.

Don Rodrigo and the others in the story

Rodrigo acts through others, including the Griso, who leads his men in an attempt to carry Lucia away. When Lucia takes shelter elsewhere, Rodrigo seeks help from the feared lord known as the Unnamed.

His conflict with Renzo and Lucia reveals a society where officials have reasons to look away. Against his power, Fra Cristoforo offers a different kind of authority, grounded in defending the weak.
