A city of flags on the Green
The story opens in the summer of 1812, on the day New York learns that war with England has been declared. Barr paints the Bowling Green as a place of both fighting and home life.
On the Green stands the red brick house of Judge Gerardus Bloommaert. His only daughter, Sapphira, is its chief ornament. Young men find reasons to walk past her window.
Her grandmother, Madame Jonaca Bloommaert, is seventy-four and fiercely Dutch and American at once. Her cousin Annette hides a novel under a cushion and complains that war will spoil her balls. Sapphira begs her mother to help hang out the old battle flag.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
