Für wen es gedacht ist
Readers who love lost worlds, gladiator arenas and daring rescues will find all three here. It also suits anyone curious about ancient Rome, or fond of clever escapes, loyal friends and a brave little monkey.
Worum es in diesem Buch geht
Tarzan and the Lost Empire is a jungle adventure by Edgar Rice Burroughs, one of the many novels in his Tarzan series. It sends the ape-man north from his own country to search for a missing young scholar, and it ends up somewhere no reader of jungle tales expects: a hidden canyon where the Roman Empire lives on.
The book was written for readers who love quick action, narrow escapes and wild places. Burroughs mixes the old legend of a lost tribe with a bold idea. What if a Roman cohort had marched up the Nile nearly two thousand years ago and never come back? Two rival cities grew from that march, each with its own emperor, its own arena and its own quarrels.
In these pages you will meet Tarzan, his anxious little monkey Nkima, a young archaeologist who can speak Latin, and a cast of patricians, slaves and gladiators. You will see how a man raised by apes handles chains, emperors and crowds. First, the story begins with a worried father walking into Tarzan's camp.

A father asks Tarzan for help
The story opens in Tarzan's jungle. His little monkey Nkima is chattering on his shoulder and warns that strangers are near. Tarzan and Muviro, the sub-chief of the Waziri, are camped with twenty fighting men while they hunt a cunning cattle-killer. Soon a bearded white man walks into camp with a small band of porters. He is Doctor von Harben, a mission doctor Tarzan knows.
The doctor is in deep trouble. His only son, Erich, has trained for years in archaeology and ancient languages. Erich is also a skilled mountain climber, and he has studied the Bantu dialects spoken near his father's mission. While he studied them, he heard the old legend of the Lost Tribe of the Wiramwazi Mountains. Local people say a white tribe lives deep inside that range, and some call them ghosts.
The doctor had encouraged the young man to go, and had helped him prepare his safari. Now some of Erich's men have crept home to their villages and will not talk. Rumors say something has gone wrong. When von Harben tried to raise a rescue party, nearly no one would go near mountains haunted by bloodthirsty spirits.
Tarzan agrees at once, but he refuses an escort. He explains that he moves faster alone and that the jungle keeps no secrets from him. Jungle creatures treat him as one of their own, and they would run from a column of strangers. He tells Muviro to take the Waziri home and keep their war paint ready, in case a message comes.
Tarzan leaves that very night, under a full moon, with his bow, rope and his dead father's hunting knife. He takes Nkima along to carry any call for help back to Muviro. He walks away without a word of farewell, and the doctor is reminded of Numa the lion. The first chapter sets up the book's promise: a rescue, a legend and a hero who trusts his senses more than any map.
