Für wen es gedacht ist

For readers who love short, dark fiction about guilt, empire and the cracks in respectable lives, and who enjoy haunted chiefs, isolated trading stations and marriages under strain.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

A proud chief cannot sleep. Two clerks drift toward ruin at a lonely station. A London businessman finds his calm is borrowed. Tales of Unrest, published in 1898, gathers five short stories by Joseph Conrad, written soon after he left the sea and began to make his name as a writer in English. Three tales are set in the Malay world and in Africa, where he had worked as a sailor. In each, a person who trusts a settled order meets something that breaks it.

A chief is haunted by his past

Karain: A Memory is told by a white trader who sails the islands of the Malay archipelago with a few friends, selling guns. One of their customers is Karain, ruler of a small coastal state. He is a proud man, splendid in dress, and a silent warrior is always at his shoulder. His people believe his attendant has power over ghosts and can turn evil spirits against enemies. The white traders see a figure of power, but they gradually learn that he is afraid. His own face shows a fear that no gunpowder can cure. One night he tells them why. His story reaches back to his youth, when he left home with a close friend and they wandered together. A bond was broken between them, and its consequence has followed Karain ever since. He is haunted by a presence from that time, and it grows stronger when he is alone. The narrator and his friend Hollis answer him in very different ways. Hollis is dry and doubtful, while the narrator is moved. The traders must decide what to offer a man who asks for help against a ghost. Their answer is odd, practical and a little comic. The narrator looks back across years and leaves the reader to wonder what to make of the traders' answer.

Questions about Tales of Unrest

What is Tales of Unrest about?

It is a collection of five short stories by Joseph Conrad.

Which stories are in Tales of Unrest?

The collection holds Karain: A Memory, The Idiots, An Outpost of Progress, The Return and The Lagoon. They were published together in 1898, and some had appeared earlier in magazines.

Is An Outpost of Progress linked to Heart of Darkness?

Many readers see it as an early sketch for Heart of Darkness. Both draw on Conrad's own time in the Congo in 1890 and show Europeans losing their moral footing in a remote trading post.

Is Tales of Unrest hard to read?

No. Each of the five stories is a short piece you can read in a single sitting, one at a time. Each one follows a clear, simple situation, like a chief who cannot sleep or a man telling his past by a fire.

What is the main message of Tales of Unrest?

Conrad suggests that outward order and confidence are fragile. Under pressure from conscience, isolation or desire, people and their claims to civilization can break down, whether in a village, a colony or a drawing room.
