Für wen es gedacht ist

Readers who enjoy affectionate family stories, lively old professors and strong-willed grandmothers, and who like to see a spoiled girl grow up in a gentle comedy of manners with a warm heart.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

Some grandmothers win every argument by simply refusing to lose. Ilse Gontrau is one of them. In Suze La Chapelle-Roobol's family novel, this widow in a German town awaits her daughter Marianne, who returns from San Francisco with three children. Her seventeen-year-old granddaughter Irma, a pampered favourite, is about to meet cousins who travel alone, rent houses and speak of work as plain fact. Across the years, the book asks what real love and real pride look like, and how a hot-tempered old woman guides the young.

Punkt 1 von 9

Two worlds meet at the station

Ilse Gontrau waits at home, a widow with snow-white hair, while Irma and grumpy Professor Fuchs go to meet the train. The professor plays the bear, though the whole city knows his generosity.

Maud, Agnes and little Karl step off with only small suitcases. They are neat, plain and sure of themselves. At dinner Irma learns they crossed Paris alone and met no trouble.

The next morning Irma oversleeps, while her cousins have already made their beds. She finds that she is the one who feels out of place.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
