Für wen es gedacht ist

For readers who love military history and strategy, and anyone curious about how sea power shapes the world through trade, diplomacy and the cooperation of fleets and armies.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

Imagine two great powers racing to build battleships, each sure that one huge clash of fleets will decide the next war. In 1911 Julian Corbett, an English lawyer turned naval historian, disagrees. Some Principles of Maritime Strategy grows out of his lectures to naval officers. He argues that fleets do not exist to sink other fleets for its own sake. They exist to help a nation reach the aims for which it went to war, working alongside armies, diplomacy and money. His ideas on command of the sea, the fleet in port and trade still shape thinking today.

Punkt 1 von 9

War is policy, not just fighting

Corbett leans on Carl von Clausewitz. War is a continuation of national policy by other means. A nation fights to gain land, security or trade, not for the pleasure of winning battles.

Officers trained for combat often treat victory in the field as the goal itself. Corbett warns that a country can win every fight and still fail in its purpose.

So strategy begins with the government, which decides what it wants and what it will pay. Any plan should first ask what it is trying to achieve, and whether force is the right way to get it.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about Einige Grundsätze der Seestrategie

What is Some Principles of Maritime Strategy about?

It is a study of how wars at sea should be planned. Corbett argues that naval power serves the aims of the whole war, and that command of the sea means control of communications, not simply destroying enemy ships.

What does command of the sea mean?

For Corbett, it means the ability to use the sea routes for your own trade, troops and supplies while denying them to the enemy. It is not ownership of the water, and it can be general or local.

What is a fleet in being?

It is a fleet that avoids destruction yet stays a threat.

How does Corbett differ from Mahan?

Mahan stressed decisive battle between main fleets. Corbett agreed battle can matter but put more weight on limited war, the link between sea and land, and control of communications.

Is Some Principles of Maritime Strategy hard to read?

No. The book follows a simple plan, starting with what war is for and then building up one idea at a time, in parts that each cover a single theme. Corbett also explains his terms plainly, such as command of the sea.
