Für wen es gedacht ist
For readers who love Dostoyevsky's moral and psychological force, short, sharp stories, bitter comedy and ghostly satire, and anyone drawn to lonely dreamers, troubled minds and the hope of being understood.
Worum es in diesem Buch geht
Fyodor Dostoyevsky is known for his long novels, but he also wrote shorter fiction across his whole career, from his early years in the 1840s to the 1870s and early 1880s. Stories gathered under this title range from tender sketches of lonely young dreamers to bitter comedy, ghostly satire and confessions told in the voice of a troubled mind.
The tales share the streets of St Petersburg, the pressure of money and rank, and a close look at what people do when they are alone with their thoughts. You get Dostoyevsky's big questions in small spaces: what makes us cruel, what makes us kind, and whether we can ever really reach another person. Each story can be heard in a sitting. We begin with a young man who walks the white summer nights of the capital with nobody to talk to.

A lonely dreamer meets a girl on a bridge
In White Nights, a young man lives alone in St Petersburg, the city of pale summer evenings when the sun barely sets. He has no family worth naming and almost no friends. He fills his days with daydreams so rich that they feel more real to him than the streets he walks.
One night he sees a girl standing by a canal railing, crying. He does something very unusual for him. He speaks to her, and he keeps her safe from a stranger who is following her. She is called Nastenka, and she is young, lively and open.
They agree to meet again on the following evenings. Over these nights each tells the other the story of a life. He explains what it means to be a dreamer, a person who lives in imagined worlds. She tells him about her grandmother, the small house where she grew up, and a hope that keeps her waiting.
The story is gentle and almost musical, and it moves in a few short evenings. It asks what happens to a shy heart when someone finally listens to it. Watch how his words grow warmer as the nights pass, and how little he dares to ask for.

Questions about Erzählungen
What are Dostoyevsky's short stories about?
They deal with lonely people, money and rank, guilt, pride and the longing to be understood. Settings are mostly St Petersburg, and many stories are told by a single restless voice that gives away more than it means to.
Which Dostoyevsky short story should I read first?
White Nights is the usual starting point. It is gentle, short and lyrical, and it shows his sympathy for lonely people. If you like humour, try The Crocodile or Bobok next.
Are Dostoyevsky's short stories hard to read?
They are easier than his long novels. The plots are small and the pages few. Some, like Bobok, are odd or satirical.
What is The Dream of a Ridiculous Man about?
It follows a despairing man who has decided that nothing matters. One night he dreams of another world, and the dream changes how he thinks about people and about his own life.
Is Dostoyevsky's short fiction connected to his novels?
Yes. The stories use the same ideas, such as pride, poverty, guilt and the search for meaning, but on a smaller scale. Many readers find them a good way into his style.
