Worum es in diesem Buch geht
Ruth Fielding on the St. Lawrence is an adventure novel by Alice B. Emerson, one volume in the Ruth Fielding series for young readers. It is set in the summer after the First World War armistice. Ruth, the girl from the Red Mill, now writes film scenarios for the Alectrion Film Corporation. She travels to the Thousand Islands, where the film company is making her picture about early French Canada. The book gives you friendship, jealousy, business worries and a mystery on the river, all moving at a quick pace.
The trouble starts early. A rival producer named Bilby wants Ruth's Osage star, Wonota, and he will use courts, papers and worse to get her. An odd old man on a rocky island calls himself a king and warns Ruth away. Meanwhile Tom Cameron and Chessleigh Copley compete for her attention, and Helen Cameron is cross with nearly everyone. You will meet the lively cast of a movie camp, a boatman who knows every channel, and a river full of small secrets. The best place to begin is a New York wedding, where Ruth's friends gather and a piece of the ceiling comes down.

A Wedding Gathers Ruth's Friends
The story opens in a New York church in June, the June after the armistice. Jennie Stone, the plump and cheerful girl her school friends call Heavy, is marrying Major Henri Marchand, a French officer she met while doing war work in France. Ruth Fielding is the maid of honor, and Tom Cameron is the best man. Old Mammy Rose pushes forward with a homemade birthday cake, and the courtly Henri bows to her as if she were a duchess.
At the wedding breakfast the seating causes trouble. Ruth is placed beside Chessleigh Copley, a former sergeant nicknamed Lasses because of his light hair, while Tom sits across the table and watches. Tom grows gloomier with every smile Ruth gives his rival. Then a piece of plaster breaks loose from the ceiling above the chandelier, and Chess drags Ruth clear just in time.
The accident gives the first look at a tangle between the young people. Tom says something sharp about close-ups, and Chess calls him a dog in the manger. Helen Cameron, Tom's twin sister, will not speak to Chess at all, and nobody explains why. Ruth only knows that Helen usually gets over a bad mood quickly, and she hopes that will happen here.
Later, in the room the girls share, Ruth describes her next job. She will help make a picture on the St. Lawrence for Mr. Hammond, with the Osage actress Wonota in a leading part. Other producers have begun to court Wonota and her father, Chief Totantora. Ruth names a small-time producer called Bilby who seems to have friends at the Indian Bureau. Helen announces she is coming north too, and everyone learns that the Copleys spend every summer in the Thousand Islands.
