A stranger in black stops a whipping
The story opens in Cottonwoods, a village in southern Utah. Jane Withersteen owns most of it, along with the great ranch and Amber Spring, the water that makes life possible. Elder Tull, a church leader and her jealous suitor, arrives with six other riders. He means to whip Bern Venters, a Gentile rider whose friendship with Jane offends the Church.
Jane pleads for mercy, but her old habit of obedience pulls her toward giving in. Then something hardens in her. She looks out over the sage and prays for a fearless man to ride out and restrain her people. A rider appears against the western sky, dressed in black leather, with two black-handled guns slung low. When Tull orders him to move on, his voice turns cold, and he says the prisoner is staying.
Venters cries out the name Lassiter, and the Mormons freeze. Tull and his men retreat, and the scene ends without a shot.
A feared name can do the work of an army.
