A fake landslide stops the night freight

Ralph Fairbanks wins the night run to Dover over the late and unreliable Jim Evans, who swears to get even. His engineer is kindly old John Griscom, whose eyes are failing.

In a deep cut, Ralph sees a mass of earth fall across the rails and throws the air brake just in time. A scrap of paper marked Handle With Care, Dynamite tells him the slide is a trap. He uncouples the caboose, lets it roll backward down the grade, and runs to the village of Brocton for help.

The robbers escape with some silk, but a cap left behind carries the initials of his old enemy Ike Slump. From the first night, the book shows how quick thinking and steady nerve mark Ralph as a railroader to watch.

That’s 1 of 7 key points.
