Für wen es gedacht ist

Readers who love royal courts, strong-willed heroines and Swedish history will feel at home here. It suits anyone drawn to the Baltic world of the 1600s, to scholars and favorites, and to a queen who wants a life of her own.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

Queen Moi-Même is a historical novel by the Swedish writer Elisabeth Kuylenstierna-Wenster, who died in 1933. It follows Kristina, the daughter of King Gustavus Adolphus, from her birth in 1626 through the years of her reign. The book covers a whole reign, and it shows the court, the council chamber, the city streets and a country parsonage.

The story begins on a winter night in Stockholm, where the nobility waits for a royal prince and gets a dark-haired girl instead. From there it moves through a childhood spent among tutors and regents, a sudden crown, a bold young favorite, a bitter quarrel with the old chancellor, and a court of foreign scholars and charmers. Real people walk through its pages, among them Axel Oxenstierna, Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie, Ebba Brahe, the future king Karl Gustaf, Bourdelot and Pimentelli.

You will hear how the queen is shaped by people who want her to be one thing while she longs to be another. You will meet the peasants who beg her for bread, the tailor who becomes a nobleman, and the young man whose pen gets him into trouble. Let us begin where the book begins, with a carriage rattling through the sleet toward the royal chamber.

A daughter arrives where a prince was awaited

The novel opens in December 1626, on a raw evening in Stockholm. Two noblewomen, the stern Countess Ebba Leijonhufvud and the timid Lady Anna Bååt, ride in a jolting carriage to the royal palace. They have been summoned because Queen Maria Eleonora is about to give birth, and everyone expects a boy. Their talk is full of the Livonian estates, sick children and the king's trembling illness.

In the antechamber the court ladies wait among dwarfs, fools and astrologers. The learned men watch a clock and the stars, and one of them says that if the child lives a day, something great will come of it. Then cheers break out for a prince. A moment later the joy dies, because the midwives have made a mistake and the baby is a girl, born with a caul over her small body and covered in dark hair.

The king, Gustavus Adolphus, receives the news with more grace than anyone expects. He thanks God and says the daughter will be as good as a son, adding with a smile that she has fooled them all. His sister Katarina, the Countess Palatine, carries the child through the hall. She feels tenderness for every creature cast aside without love.

The queen takes it very differently. Maria Eleonora turns her face away from the baby, calls her ugly and wishes she had not lived. Katarina warns her that a child starved of love may one day forget she is a daughter. The king comes in to speak of a name, and he chooses Kristina, after his own mother. His wife's jealousy of the child flares at once.

The chapter ends with a falling beam beside the cradle, which the baby survives unhurt, and with a German governess whispering tales of trolls and werewolves into the queen's ear. She names the chancellor as the beast, and the queen enjoys the fable. From its first pages the book sets a pattern. Kristina is surrounded by omens, by flattery and by people who cannot decide whether to love her.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
