Für wen es gedacht ist

Worum es in diesem Buch geht
Paradise Regained is a short epic poem by John Milton, published in 1671 in the same volume as his verse drama Samson Agonistes. It comes from the last years of a life in which Milton had gone blind, served the English Commonwealth as a writer, and lost almost everything he had worked for. The poem is in four books. It takes one episode from the Gospels, the forty days Jesus spends in the wilderness after his baptism, and builds it into a contest of minds between Jesus and Satan.
Milton had told the fall of humankind in Paradise Lost. Here he tells how that loss begins to be undone, and he does it with no battles in heaven and no armies. The weapons are arguments, offers and refusals. You get a quiet, tense poem about what it means to be offered everything you could want and to say no. Along the way you meet a Satan who is clever, flattering and often reasonable-sounding, and a Jesus who answers him slowly. Let us begin where the poem begins, with a baptism at the river Jordan.

A baptism sets the contest in motion
The poem opens by stating its plan. Milton, who once sang of paradise lost through one man's disobedience, now sings of paradise recovered through one man's firm obedience. He calls on the Spirit to help him, and then moves straight to the river Jordan, where John the Baptist is preaching.
Jesus comes to be baptized. The Spirit descends like a dove, and a voice from heaven names him as the Son of God. Satan hears it too. He has been wandering the world since his fall, and he now knows that a new human being has been marked out for something enormous.
Satan hurries to a council of his fellow fallen spirits in the air. He tells them what he has heard and what he fears. He reminds them that he once beat Adam, and he says he will now go out alone to test this man. The council agrees, and Satan departs to find him.
Heaven watches as well. God speaks to the angel Gabriel and says that Satan will be allowed to try Jesus, so that the world may see what the Son can do when he is stripped of every outward help. This matters for how you read what follows. The reader knows from the start that Jesus is being tested on purpose, and the suspense lies in how he answers, not in whether a rescue will come.

Questions about Das wiedergewonnene Paradies
What is Paradise Regained about?
It retells the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness. After his baptism, Jesus faces Satan, who offers him food, wealth, glory, power and learning. The poem shows how he answers each offer and what that says about true obedience.
Is Paradise Regained a sequel to Paradise Lost?
Yes, in theme if not in plot. Paradise Lost tells how humankind fell. Paradise Regained shows how Jesus resists Satan, and its opening lines present it as the answer to the earlier poem.
When was Paradise Regained written and published?
It was published in 1671 in a volume together with Samson Agonistes. Milton wrote it in his later years, after he had gone blind and after the political cause he supported had collapsed.
Is Paradise Regained hard to read?
It is easier than Paradise Lost in some ways, with a smaller cast and a single setting.
Why is Paradise Regained shorter than Paradise Lost?
Milton chose a brief epic form. It has four books and one main scene, the wilderness. Its action is a series of conversations, so it needs less space than a story of war in heaven.
