Für wen es gedacht ist

For readers who love a heroine with a sharp mind and a strong will, stories told through letters, and tense household drama where class, money and conscience collide in every scene.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

A fifteen-year-old maid writes home to her parents about a death in the house and a surprising kindness. So begins Pamela, or Virtue Rewarded, Samuel Richardson's novel in letters from 1740. Pamela Andrews serves a gentle lady, and when the lady dies, Pamela is left in the care of the lady's son, a young landowner she calls her master. Almost every page is her own letter or journal, so you live the story as she does, with her fears, her jokes and her quick temper. You get a household drama, then a tale of captivity, with notes hidden under garden tiles and a night climb over a wall. The ending stays hidden.

Kindness That Frightens Her Parents

Pamela's mistress has died, and the young master, called Mr. B, keeps her in the house. He gives her mourning clothes and four gold guineas, which she sends home in a little pillbox.

Pamela decides she serves the best of gentlemen. Her parents read the same events with dread. They see the smiles, the held hand and the praise as a trap.

Mrs. Jervis the housekeeper treats Pamela like a daughter. But when Pamela's move to his sister's service is blocked, her tone changes, and her next letter begins with a terrible scene.
