Worum es in diesem Buch geht
Old Love Stories is a collection of short tales by the Italian writer Adolfo Albertazzi, who died in 1924. The book draws on medieval fabliaux, saints' lives, the Novellino and the Italian novella tradition. The tales range from the castles of the Middle Ages to the salons of the eighteenth century, and each looks at love from a new side.
You meet a page who starves himself for a lady, a bride carried off by a runaway horse, a monk who walks into a house of sin, and a crusader who loses his ring. Later come a girl swept away by the wrong rider, a wife who forgives a ghost, a merchant's wife caught in a promise, and a Venetian gentleman who ruins himself with letters. A deceitful lady and a count with his finger on a pulse close the book. Let us begin with the first group of tales, set in the castles of the Middle Ages.

A page starves for his lady
The book opens at Ripalta Castle, where the lord has raised a page named Ugo like a son. His wife, Lady Ginevra, is cheerful and childlike, and she laughs at the boy's pranks. She sings at her window and feeds the chickens, and the whole household loves her.
When Ugo turns fifteen, he changes. He feels restless and sad, and one noon he hears Ginevra singing high above him. At once his vague longing takes her shape. He serves her with trembling hands, but she sees only a boy and no longer ruffles his hair.
While the lord is away at a tournament, Ugo finds her in her room. He asks a sly question about a lover who has not dared to speak, and she teases him. Then he confesses. She is offended and sends him away, and he swears he will not eat until she grants his wish.
He goes to bed and refuses food for three days. The tale watches how his pride and his love feed each other, and how a young heart can turn a rash vow into something heroic.

What is Old Love Stories about?
It is a collection of twelve short tales by Adolfo Albertazzi, ranging from medieval castles to eighteenth century salons, and each about desire, jealousy, faith or cunning in love.
Are the stories in Old Love Stories true?
They are retellings of older sources, such as French fabliaux, the Novellino, the Gesta Romanorum and saints' lives. One tale uses real Venetian love letters from 1569, and some parts are the author's own invention.

Is Old Love Stories easy to read?
Yes, in the sense of short, self-contained tales. Each story has its own setting and cast, so you can read one at a sitting, and the plots turn on clear objects like a falcon, a horse or a ring.
