A Stranger Needs Help Buying a Hat
The book opens with a man from out of town who needs a favor. Goliah Daggett, a wheat farmer from South Forks, Iowa, stops Shorty at a hat shop window on Fifth Avenue. He wants a giant heliotrope hat, and he is too shy to walk in alone.
As they stroll, Daggett shares a plan. He wants a manicurist from his hotel, who looks like his wife might have looked years ago, to try the hat on. Shorty listens as this unusual stranger draws him into his errand.
The scene sets the pattern for the whole book. Shorty starts out joking and ends up helping. A comic errand carries real feeling, and the later tales do the same.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
