Worum es in diesem Buch geht
Imagine leaving the warm lands of Egypt and India to chase the opposite extreme: an Arctic winter, then a summer sun that never sets. That is the wish of Bayard Taylor, an American traveler. Northern Travel tells of his ten months in Sweden, Lapland, Norway and Denmark in 1856 and 1857. He sets out in December with his friend Braisted, by sled and by reindeer, and returns in summer by carriole and coastal steamer. The book is full of cold, colors, inns, kind hosts and plain opinions, told in a direct, humorous voice.

Punkt 1 von 9
A winter crossing to Stockholm
The journey begins on the first of December 1856, when Taylor and Braisted board the small Swedish steamer Carl Johan at Lübeck. The Baltic is cold and stormy, and the overloaded ship feels its way through fog and snow. A cabin boy is thrown into the icy water by a lurch and cannot be saved.
Ice blocks the harbor at Stockholm, so the ship lands at little Dalarö. The travelers hire sleds and drive through pine forests so covered with frost that they look like bronze trees dusted with silver.
In Stockholm nobody can tell Taylor how to travel in the far north in winter. He buys furs and boots, studies Swedish for a week, and tells himself that frightening stories dissolve when you face them boldly.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
