Für wen es gedacht ist

For readers who love a brisk Victorian puzzle with a clear heroine, a sharp eye for class, and a plot to enjoy in one sitting.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

My Lady's Money is a short mystery by Wilkie Collins, first published in 1877. It carries the longer title An Episode in the Life of a Young Lady, and that phrase tells you where its heart lies. Collins wrote it in the years after The Woman in White and The Moonstone had made him the leading English writer of sensation fiction. Here he works on a small canvas, with a household, a handful of people and one missing banknote.

The story follows a young woman who lives as a companion in a wealthy lady's home. When money goes missing, the eyes of the house turn toward her. You get a puzzle, but also a test of loyalty, pride and nerve. Collins likes to ask who is believed and why, and how quickly a good name can be lost. Let us begin with the household itself, and the people who live under one roof.

A rich widow keeps a young companion

The story opens in the London of the 1870s, in the house of Lady Lydiard, a wealthy widow with strong opinions and a generous temper. She is used to being obeyed, and she is used to speaking her mind. Her fortune gives her power over everyone near her, from the servants to the relatives who hope to be remembered.

In her house lives Isabel Miller, a young woman who serves as her companion. Isabel is not a servant, yet she is not quite a member of the family either. She depends on the old lady's kindness for her place in the world. Collins uses this position to show how fragile a young woman's standing could be when she had no money of her own.

Around them move other figures. There is a young gentleman of the family, Felix Sweetsir, whose manners are smooth and whose character is less admirable than his manners. There is also Robert Moody, Lady Lydiard's steward, who watches Isabel with a steady and unspoken devotion. Each of them wants something, and the wants begin to cross.

The opening is therefore a portrait of a household in balance. Money sits at the centre of the house, as the title says, and everybody leans toward it in some way. Collins sets the scales carefully so that a single small event can tip them.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.

Questions about Das Geld meiner Lady

Who wrote My Lady's Money and when?

Wilkie Collins wrote it, and it appeared in 1877. By then he was well known for The Woman in White and The Moonstone, and this work is a much shorter tale.

Why is My Lady's Money also called An Episode in the Life of a Young Lady?

The longer title points to the focus of the story, which is one troubling stretch in the life of the young companion, Isabel Miller, rather than the whole of her life.

Is My Lady's Money hard to read?

No. It is short, the scenes move quickly, and the dialogue is lively. The plot is easy to follow.

Is My Lady's Money worth reading?

It is a good choice if you want a compact mystery by Collins. It shows his skill with plot, his humour, and his interest in how class and money affect who gets believed.
