Für wen es gedacht ist

For readers who love old-fashioned adventure, vivid battles and doomed love, and anyone curious about the Aztec world and the conquest of Mexico.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

Montezuma's Daughter is an adventure novel by H. Rider Haggard, published in 1893. Haggard was already known for King Solomon's Mines and She. Here he turns to a real event, the Spanish conquest of Mexico between 1519 and 1521. He tells it through an invented Englishman, Thomas Wingfield, who is born in the English countryside in the reign of Henry the Eighth and ends up in the heart of the Aztec world.

The book gives you three stories at once. One is a tale of private wrong and the vow of vengeance it creates. One is a love story between Thomas and Otomie, a daughter of the Aztec emperor Montezuma. The third is the clash of two civilizations, seen from inside the city of Tenochtitlan, with its temples, markets, causeways and sacrifices. Haggard wrote it after reading the Spanish chroniclers, and the real figures of the conquest walk through its pages. Let us begin where Thomas begins, in a quiet English home that will not stay quiet for long.

An English boyhood and a binding vow

The story begins in England, in the countryside of the early sixteenth century. Thomas Wingfield grows up in a gentleman's family, in a world of village life, church and old loyalties. He is telling his own story as an older man, and his voice is plain, honest and a little stern.

His young life is shaped by two forces. One is love, for a girl named Lily Bozard, who stands for the gentle home he will lose. The other is a wrong done to his family by someone close to it. Haggard uses this wrong to give Thomas a purpose that lasts through every later page.

Thomas does not shrug the injury off. He swears that he will answer it, and the oath becomes the thread that pulls him out of England and across the ocean. Haggard likes heroes who carry a promise, and this one is a heavy load.

It sets up Thomas as a man of conscience, a believer in an English sense of honor, who will later be tested in a land where nothing is familiar. When you reach Mexico, remember the English village, because the book keeps measuring the new world against the old one.
