Worum es in diesem Buch geht
Maya the Bee is a children's novel by Waldemar Bonsels, a German writer who died in 1952. It follows a young honeybee who hatches into a hive in turmoil and decides that a life of carrying honey and making wax is not for her. She wants to see the flowering world for herself and, above all, to meet a human being, the creature her teacher calls the most perfect in nature.
On the way, Maya talks with beetles, a grasshopper, a housefly, a dragonfly, a butterfly and a poet ladybug. Each has a strong opinion about the world and about people, and not all of them are kind. The book gives you a small traveler's view of meadows, lakes and forests, with humor, danger and moments of real tenderness. Let us begin where Maya begins, in the crowded hive on the first morning of her life.

A young bee chooses freedom over duty
The story opens in a hive in uproar. A revolt has split the bees, and a swarm is leaving to found a new state. In the middle of the crush, an older bee named Kassandra helps a newborn called Maya out of her cell and dries her large bright eyes. Kassandra is stern, yet she soon grows fond of this child who asks too many questions and cannot sit still.
Kassandra teaches the first rule of hive life: think of the welfare of all and be like the others. Maya must learn a hundred flowers by heart and follow an older companion on short flights. Maya answers that she would rather see the flowers for herself. Kassandra sighs, but she gives Maya more advice than most young bees ever hear. She warns her about hornets and wasps, and about the sting that kills a bee if it strikes a warm-blooded creature.
Then she speaks of humans, calling them the highest beings nature has made. Those words plant in Maya a great longing to meet one. The next morning a honey carrier leads her out through the gate, past the guards and the password. Maya shuts her eyes against a flood of golden light. Then she lifts her new wings and flies for the first time, so fast that her companion cannot keep up.
Drunk with joy, Maya races on until she drops into a bed of red tulips in a great garden. There she decides she will never go back to carry honey or make wax. Her heart, she says, is made for surprises and adventures. The story remarks that she would think twice if she knew the dangers ahead, but she does not know them. She falls asleep in the tulip, tired and happy.
