The plot in six lines
Mrs Norris arranges for her relatives to take in Fanny Price, whose childhood at Mansfield teaches her how sharply the household distinguishes her from her cousins.
As Fanny grows up, Edmund treats her as an equal, but the arrival of Henry Crawford and Mary Crawford exposes competing desires for love, money and amusement.
At Sotherton, Maria slips around a locked gate with Henry despite her engagement to Mr Rushworth, while Edmund's attention to Mary leaves Fanny feeling forgotten.
During Sir Thomas's absence, the young people prepare a private play, Edmund abandons his objections, and Fanny resists taking a part until Sir Thomas returns and stops the production.
After Maria marries Mr Rushworth, Henry pursues Fanny and proposes, but she refuses him, prompting Sir Thomas to send her to Portsmouth hoping poverty will change her mind.
Henry runs away with Maria, bringing disgrace upon the family, while Edmund breaks with Mary over her response and eventually marries Fanny, who is welcomed back to Mansfield.

A two-week plan
- Day oneRead the 15-minute summary of Mansfield Park from start to finish, then tell the story back to yourself in five sentences.
- Day twoA poor girl is sent to Mansfield: Notice how Edmund's small kindness contrasts with the household's reminders of Fanny's lower position. Fanny grows up as the lesser cousin: Watch how outward obedience conceals weaknesses in the Bertram children's upbringing.
- Day threeThe Crawfords bring charm and trouble: Compare Fanny's judgment of the Crawfords with Edmund's willingness to excuse Mary's remarks. A day at Sotherton shows hidden strains: Notice how the locked gate gives Maria's impatience a meaning beyond the afternoon's walk.
- Day fourSir Thomas leaves and the play begins: Follow the small excuses that turn Edmund's objection to the play into participation.
- Day fiveFanny alone says no: Watch how Fanny's dependence increases the personal cost of refusing a part.
- Day sixHenry Crawford sets his heart on Fanny: Compare Henry's help for William with Fanny's continuing doubts about his character.
- Day sevenWhat the book is really about: Trace how money, upbringing and religious duty offer different measures of a person's worth.
- Day eightHow Austen tells it: Notice how closeness to Fanny's thoughts combines with the narrator's more distant, dry comments.
