Für wen es gedacht ist

For readers who love short, quiet fiction, close observation of people and stories that leave questions open, with humour, irony and the everyday dramas of Russian life.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

Love, and Other Stories gathers short fiction by Anton Chekhov, the Russian doctor who became one of the most admired writers of the short story. The tales belong to the world of provincial Russia in the late nineteenth century, a world of country estates, small towns, clerks, landowners, wives, students and officers.

Chekhov wrote them with a light hand. Nobody in these stories makes a grand speech or wins a great battle. Instead, ordinary people hope, hesitate, misjudge each other and carry on. The collection gives you a sense of how Chekhov looks at people with humour and pity at once. It also shows how a few pages can hold a whole life. Let us begin with the way he sees his characters.

Punkt 1 von 4

Chekhov watches people like a doctor

Chekhov trained as a physician and practised medicine for much of his life. Many readers see that training in his fiction. He looks at his characters calmly, notes their habits and weaknesses, and does not rush to judge them.

This habit gives the stories a steady, honest tone. A character may be vain, lazy or cowardly, yet the author does not shout about it. He lets small details do the work, such as a gesture at a dinner table, a remark that comes out wrong, or a silence that lasts too long.

For you as a reader, this means paying attention to what is shown rather than what is stated. The meaning often sits just under the surface. When you notice it yourself, the effect is stronger than any explanation could be.

Questions about Liebe und andere Erzählungen

What is Love, and Other Stories about?

It is a collection of short stories by Chekhov about ordinary people in Russia in the late nineteenth century. Love, longing, habit, disappointment and small moments of human folly are the main concerns.

Is Love, and Other Stories hard to read?

No. The sentences are plain and the stories are short. Chekhov often leaves feelings unspoken and endings open.

Why is Chekhov important as a short story writer?

He showed that a story could focus on small moments and unresolved feelings instead of dramatic plots. Many later short story writers learned from his restraint, irony and open endings.

Do I need to know Russian history to read Chekhov?

Not much. Knowing that Russia then had strict social ranks and a large countryside helps a little, but the emotions and situations in the stories are easy to recognise.

What is the main message of Chekhov's stories?

Chekhov did not preach a single message. His stories suggest that people are mixed, hopeful and flawed, and that quiet moments of love or failure matter as much as large events.
