Worum es in diesem Buch geht
A man lies dead in the early part of the night. At first light he sits up, and the mourners around him run away in terror. Only his wife stays, shaking, and he tells her not to be afraid.
The Vision of Drythelm is a short account from the Ecclesiastical History of the English People by Bede, the Northumbrian monk who finished that history around 731. Bede does not offer this story as a fable. He names the people who passed it on. You follow Drythelm through a valley of fire and ice, a pit in the dark, a towering wall, and a meadow full of flowers.

A householder dies and comes back at dawn
The account opens in Cunningham, a district of Northumbria, somewhere near the year 696. There lives a head of household who is devout, as is his family. He is known for his piety and his care for the poor. He falls ill, grows worse day by day, and dies in the early part of the night.
Bede says why the story matters. A man returned to life after a period of death so that those still alive might be saved from the death of the soul. The purpose is stated before the tale begins.
The scene at dawn is simple and sharp. People sit weeping around the body. Then the dead man sits up, and nearly everyone flees in fear. Only his wife stays. She is shaking with fright, but she does not leave him.
He comforts her. He tells her not to be afraid, for he has truly risen from death and may live among people again. Then he adds that from this point on his life will be very different. He will not live as he lived before.
The telling is plain. A good, ordinary man dies and returns, and a single sentence tells you that he has changed.
An ordinary life can be broken open by something that cannot be ignored.
That’s 1 of 7 key points.
