Für wen es gedacht ist

For readers who love early Christian history, church life and leadership, and anyone curious about how ancient communities handled money, discipline and charity.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

The Didascalia Apostolorum, whose name means the Teaching of the Apostles, is a church order from the third century. It is a handbook for running a Christian community. An unknown writer, most likely a bishop, composed it in Greek, probably in northern Syria. Scholars broadly place it in the first half of the third century, though they do not agree on the exact decade. The Greek original is lost as a whole. The text survives complete in Syriac, and parts of an old Latin version survive as well.

The book speaks in the voice of the twelve apostles, as if they were writing after their meeting in Jerusalem. Under that cover it gives plain instruction on how a bishop should lead, how the church should treat people who have sinned, how widows, orphans and the poor should be cared for, and how believers should live among neighbours of other faiths. It shows what an ordinary church looked like before the great councils. You will meet a community with a budget, a seating plan, quarrels and fasts. Let us begin with the figure at the centre of it all, the bishop.

Punkt 1 von 6

The bishop is father, judge and shepherd

The Didascalia gives a careful portrait of the bishop. He is the head of the local church, and the writer gives him many images. He is a shepherd who knows his flock, a father who corrects his children, and a judge who must weigh cases fairly. The author asks the congregation to honour him in turn, almost as a representative of God among them.

But the text asks as much of the bishop as it asks of the people. He should be of good character, married no more than once, sober, patient and able to teach. An older man is preferred, because age brings steadiness. He must not be greedy, must not favour the rich, and must not be harsh to the weak. The writer warns him that he will answer for every soul placed in his care.

The bishop also manages the community's goods. Offerings come to him, and he must share them out justly among widows, orphans, strangers and the needy. The author is firm that the bishop is not an owner of this wealth. He is a steward, and a careless steward does harm to the whole church.

This picture matters because it shows a church in which one leader holds real authority, yet that authority is bound by duty. Many scholars read the book as an attempt to settle how much power a bishop should have and how gently he should use it. For a modern reader, the lesson is plain and still sharp: leadership is service, and those who lead are judged by how they treat the weakest.

Questions about The Didascalia Apostolorum

What is the Didascalia Apostolorum about?

It is a third-century guide to running a Christian church. It covers the duties of bishops and deacons, how to treat repentant sinners, the care of widows, orphans and the poor, and how believers should live.

Who wrote the Didascalia Apostolorum and when?

The author is unknown, probably a bishop in northern Syria. Scholars date the work to the first half of the third century, though they differ on the exact decade. It speaks in the voice of the apostles.

Is the Didascalia Apostolorum in the Bible?

No. It is a church order, not a book of Scripture, and scholars see it as written long after the apostles. It was valued in some regions, especially Syria, but was never part of the biblical canon.

What language does the Didascalia survive in?

It was written in Greek, but the Greek text is lost as a whole. A full Syriac version survives, along with fragments of an old Latin version. Later writers also reworked much of it into the Apostolic Constitutions.

Why is the Didascalia Apostolorum important?

It gives a detailed view of how an ordinary church lived before the fourth century, including its leaders, its charity, its discipline and its worship. It also shows early debates on forgiveness and on the Jewish Law.
