Für wen es gedacht ist

Readers who love apocryphal legends, medieval Christian storytelling, Roman emperors and the tales that grew around Veronica and her image, and anyone curious how early believers imagined the fall of Jerusalem.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

It survives in Latin in several versions. Scholars disagree about its date. Many place it in the early Middle Ages, around the seventh or eighth century, and some see older roots.

It tells how a Roman prince is healed of a cancer by faith alone, how he and Vespasian besiege Jerusalem in vengeance for the death of Jesus, and how a portrait of the face of Jesus, kept by a woman named Veronica, is carried to Rome to an ailing emperor. It stands outside the Bible as a later legend, and medieval Christians valued it as devotional storytelling. Let us begin with a sailor and a prince.

A sailor's tale heals a prince

The story opens in the days of the Emperor Tiberius. Titus, a prince, rules a city in Aquitaine, which the text oddly places in Libya and calls Burdigala. A cancer in his right nostril has eaten his face as far as the eye.

A ship from Judaea is driven by the north wind into his harbor. Its captain is Nathan, son of Nahum, an Ishmaelite sent with a treaty for Tiberius, who is himself covered in ulcers, fevers and leprosy. Titus offers a rich reward for any herb or cure. Nathan knows no medicine. Instead he tells of Jesus, called Emmanuel, who turned water into wine at Cana, cleansed lepers, gave sight to the blind and fed five thousand with five loaves and two fish.

Nathan also names Veronica, the woman who suffered a flow of blood for twelve years and touched the fringe of the garment. He insists he saw the risen Jesus himself. Titus asks how a dead man could rise. Nathan answers that Jesus truly died, lay three days in the tomb, freed the patriarchs and prophets, and ascended before his disciples. The scene shows the power the story gives to simple eyewitness testimony.

Questions about The Avenging of the Saviour

What is The Avenging of the Saviour about?

It is a legend in which Titus is healed of a facial cancer by faith in Christ, then joins Vespasian in besieging Jerusalem in vengeance, while an envoy carries Veronica's portrait of Jesus to Rome to heal Tiberius.

What is the Vindicta Salvatoris?

It survives in several Latin versions and belongs to the apocryphal tradition of stories that expand on the Gospels and the years after the crucifixion.

Who is Veronica in this story?

Veronica is the woman who suffered a flow of blood for twelve years and was healed by touching the fringe of the garment of Jesus. Here she also keeps a portrait of his face, which becomes central to the tale.

Is The Avenging of the Saviour a true story, and when was it written?

It is a legend, not a historical record. The siege of Jerusalem in 70 was real, but the legend weaves history and imagination together. Scholars disagree on the date, with many placing it in the early Middle Ages.

Why is it not in the Bible?

It is a later legend that was never part of the canon recognized by the major churches. Medieval readers copied it as pious storytelling, and it is read today by those interested in apocryphal literature and in the history of Christian legend.
