Für wen es gedacht ist

For readers who love early Christian writing, the history of the Antichrist legend, and end-time prophecy.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

The Apocalypse of Pseudo-Ephraem is a short Christian sermon about the last days. It survives in Latin and was written under the name of Ephraem the Syrian, a fourth century church teacher. Scholars do not think Ephraem himself wrote it, which is why the author is called Pseudo-Ephraem, meaning false Ephraem. The real writer is unknown.

The text speaks in the urgent voice of a preacher. It warns that wars, hunger and disease are signs that history is near its close, and that a false messiah, the Antichrist, will rise before Christ returns. It then calls the listener to repentance and watchfulness. In the next few minutes you will hear where the text comes from, what it describes, and how readers have used it. First, the question of its age and its name.

Punkt 1 von 4

A Latin sermon under a borrowed name

Ephraem the Syrian was a deacon and poet who wrote in Syriac and died in 373. He was so admired that many later works were placed under his name. The Apocalypse of Pseudo-Ephraem is one of them.

Medieval manuscripts carry it, and scholars edited it in the nineteenth century. Related sermons in other languages also circulate under the same name, so readers should be careful not to mix them up.

Scholars disagree about when it was composed. The Latin version may date from the late sixth or early seventh century. All agree that the attribution to Ephraem is not reliable. What they share is the view that the work belongs to the long tradition of Christian apocalyptic preaching.

Questions about Apocalypse of Pseudo- Ephraem

What is the Apocalypse of Pseudo-Ephraem about?

It is a short Christian sermon about the end of the world. It describes wars and hardship, the rise of the Antichrist, a time of tribulation and the return of Christ, and it urges listeners to repent and stay faithful.

Did Ephraem the Syrian write it?

Scholars do not think so. Ephraem died in 373 and wrote in Syriac, while this sermon survives in Latin. His name was attached to it later, so the real author is called Pseudo-Ephraem.

When was the Apocalypse of Pseudo-Ephraem written?

Scholars disagree. Its manuscripts are medieval, and more than one version exists, which makes a firm date hard to give.

Is the Apocalypse of Pseudo-Ephraem in the Bible?

No. It is a later sermon written under a church father's name, not one of the books that the churches received as scripture. It was valued as preaching and warning rather than as part of the biblical canon.

Why do people connect it with the rapture?

One version has a line about the faithful being gathered before the tribulation. Some readers see an early form of the rapture idea there, but scholars debate the wording and meaning of the passage.
