In short

  • Laurie is the March sisters' lively young neighbor in Little Women; Or, Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy by Louisa May Alcott.
  • He lives with his stern grandfather, Mr. Laurence, and longs for the warmth of the March household.
  • His friendship with Jo brings him into the sisters' world of stories, games and family affection.

Who Laurie is

Laurie is the name everyone uses for Theodore, the boy who lives next door to the March family. His parents are dead, and he lives in a grand house with his wealthy grandfather, Mr. Laurence. Cheerful and a little spoiled, he is also lonely, watching the March home and wishing to share its warmth.

What Laurie wants

Laurie wants to belong to the busy, affectionate household he sees from his window. The sisters welcome him into their club, and he soon spends much of his time at their house. He sends flowers and notes, sometimes through a hole in the fence between the homes.

Laurie and the others in the story

Jo meets Laurie at a small dance, where both find themselves away from the other guests. They become friends, matching each other's high spirits, and Jo treats him like a brother. Through Laurie and his grandfather, the sisters gain a wider world of books, travel and music. In return, the Marches offer Laurie the family closeness that his comfortable home does not provide.
