Two bored guardians plan to frighten the city

The first tale begins in the great Throne Room of the Emerald City palace. For one hour each day, Princess Ozma sits on a throne of glistening emeralds and hears the troubles of her people. On either side of the throne crouch two enormous beasts, the Hungry Tiger and the Cowardly Lion.

These two are the Princess's chief guardians, yet they have nothing to guard against. Everyone in Oz loves Ozma, and the people are seldom naughty.

One day, after the room empties, the Lion yawns and says he is tired of a job where nobody fears him. The Tiger agrees, and adds that he is dreadfully hungry all the time. He thinks that if he ate a fat baby, the people would fear him.

The Lion has a wish of his own. He would like to tear a person into pieces and hear the city beg for mercy. Then, he admits, he would roar and run off to the jungle to hide. The Tiger calls him a coward, and the Lion agrees cheerfully, since that is how he got his name.

They plan to strike at the first people they meet and gallop through the city gates. But the walk is full of funny cracks in their courage. They meet no one, because the city naps at this hour. The Lion even asks, with a shudder, whether tearing someone into more than sixty pieces would hurt more.

Big talk about being wicked is easy, but the real test comes at the first street corner.

That’s 1 of 7 key points.
