A Gypsy girl dances her way into Madrid
The story begins with Preciosa, raised by an old Gypsy woman who calls herself her grandmother. The old woman trains her in every Gypsy trade, but Preciosa grows up modest, graceful and quick of mind. When she is fifteen, the pair come to Madrid for the feast of Saint Anne.
There Preciosa dances with seven other Gypsy women and sings a ballad in honor of the saint. The crowd cheers, the festival judges give her the prize, and her name spreads through every street. A few weeks later she returns with three girls and a new dance, and coins fall around her like hail on Toledo Street.
This opening shows what Preciosa has, which is talent, charm and a clear sense of her own worth. It also shows what she risks, since a beautiful girl who performs in public draws every kind of attention. The old woman watches her like a guard, and that fear shapes the whole tale.
