Für wen es gedacht ist

Readers who like early science romance, psychic mysteries with a love triangle, and an old-fashioned narrator who chats, digresses and sets his friends in peril across London, New York and the Italian lakes.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

What if a boy could sit in a cane chair in India and watch a bandit gang plan a raid in a distant wood? Karl Grier, a Scottish-German child on a Darjeeling tea estate, discovers that gift in childhood. A journalist friend records his life like a case history. He calls the gift telegnomy, or far-knowing. It lets Karl see and hear events at great distances. The tale mixes adventure, early science talk and a love story with real danger.

A child sees a raid from afar

The narrator introduces himself as the biographer of his friend Karl Grier. Karl has a sixth sense, which the two later name telegnomy, or far-knowing.

Karl grows up near Darjeeling, where his father grows tea. He hears four languages at home and understands the feeling inside every sound, even the cries of animals.

At six he promises to think of his playmate Maggie Hutchinson until bedtime. That evening he sits very still with a thin trickle of blood from one nostril. He then describes hill men planning to drug the watchmen, kill her father and carry off the wages on nine ponies. His Highland father half believes in second sight and rides to the police. The gang is taken, and the ponies are found just as described.
