A stranger washes his hands in snow

On a bitterly cold night on Broadway, Laura and her husband George see a tall, handsome gentleman in a fur-trimmed coat hurry out of the Clermont Hotel. Then he bends to the curb and scrubs his hands in the snow, quickly and with strange energy.

Before George can follow him, a commotion breaks out. The crowd says that Miss Challoner, a rich and much admired young woman, has died suddenly. Some say it was murder.

This sets the pattern for the book. Two ordinary people see a small, odd act. They cannot say what it means, but they cannot forget it.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about Nur Initialen

What is Initials Only about?

It is a detective novel about the sudden death of a wealthy young woman in a New York hotel. Two detectives follow love letters signed only with initials and find a trail that leads from Broadway to a Brooklyn tenement and a mill town in Pennsylvania.

Who are the two O. B.s in Initials Only?

They are two brothers, Orlando and Oswald Brotherson. Both wrote letters to Edith Challoner signed with only their initials, and the similar handwriting at first makes the police think one man wrote them all. Sorting out which brother wrote which is a key part of the mystery.

Who is Sweetwater in Initials Only?

Sweetwater is a young police detective, plain-faced and quick, trained by the older Mr. Gryce. He sees the likeness between two killings, goes undercover as a carpenter, and tracks his suspect to Pennsylvania, where he meets Doris Scott.

Is Initials Only part of a series?

Yes, in a sense. Anna Katharine Green created the detective Ebenezar Gryce and used him in many of her novels. Here he appears late in his career, but the book stands alone, and you do not need to have read others to follow the story.

Is Initials Only easy to follow?

The book has short chapters, clear scenes and detectives who explain their reasoning aloud. It has three parts, and each part picks up the thread so that the clues stay easy to track.
