Für wen es gedacht ist

You will enjoy this if you love war poetry, remembrance verse, short lyrics on death and rest, or the life stories of writers who also served as doctors and soldiers.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

A doctor sits in a hole at the foot of a canal bank in Flanders, treating the wounded while larks sing above the guns. Out of that moment comes one of the best-known poems of the First World War. In Flanders Fields, and Other Poems gathers the verse of John McCrae, a Canadian physician and soldier, with an essay on his life by his friend Sir Andrew Macphail. Start with the poppies, then follow the poet.

Punkt 1 von 6

A doctor, a soldier and a poet

John McCrae was a physician, an artillery officer and a poet, and this book shows all three. It holds about thirty poems dated from 1894 to 1917, followed by an essay on his life by Sir Andrew Macphail. The title poem comes first.

Half the poems first appeared in the University Magazine of Montreal, which Macphail edited. McCrae sent his poems there for years before the war. The famous poem went instead to the English magazine Punch, where it appeared without a signature in December 1915.

So the collection is wider than its title. It covers soldiers and ships, love and loss, rest after labor, and faith. Reading it, you meet the man behind one famous poem and find that his themes were set long before the trenches.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.
