Worum es in diesem Buch geht
Imagine a baby who is born at dawn, plays a lyre at midday, and steals fifty cows by evening. That is Hermes in one of the Homeric Hymns, and he is only one of many surprises on this shelf of early Greek poetry.
Hesiod, a farmer and shepherd from Boeotia, gives two long poems, Works and Days and Theogony. Beside them stand the thirty-three Homeric Hymns, short epigrams, a comic war between frogs and mice, and the tales of the Trojan Cycle. You will learn where the gods came from, why people must work, and why justice matters. You will meet Pandora, Demeter, and Aphrodite, and see how heroes lived and fell at Troy.

The Muses give a shepherd his song
Hesiod opens the Theogony by telling how he becomes a poet. While he herds lambs below Mount Helicon, the Muses call shepherds mere bellies. They hand him a laurel branch and breathe a divine voice into him. From then on he sings of what is, what will be, and what came before.
The Muses are daughters of Zeus and Memory. They say they can tell lies that sound like truth, and speak truth when they wish. Hesiod claims no power of his own.
He also speaks of his own life, which is rare in early poetry. His father left Aeolian Cyme because of poverty and settled at Ascra. His brother Perses drives the poem Works and Days, for the two men quarrel over their inheritance, and Hesiod charges Perses with winning the larger share through judges who swallow bribes. For Hesiod, song is a gift from the gods and a tool for telling the truth.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.

What is Hesiod's Theogony about?
The Theogony tells how the Greek gods came to be. It begins with Chaos and Earth, follows the Titans and the rise of Zeus, and ends with the gods' children, including heroes born to goddesses and mortal men.
What is Works and Days about?
Works and Days is Hesiod's advice to his brother Perses. It explains why people must work, tells the myths of Pandora and the five ages, urges honest justice, and gives a farmer's calendar for plowing, harvest, and sailing.
Who wrote the Homeric Hymns?
Tradition credits the thirty-three hymns to Homer, but they are the work of many poets over several centuries. They praise gods such as Demeter, Apollo, Hermes, and Aphrodite, and some were sung as preludes before epic recitations.
What is the Trojan Cycle?
The Trojan Cycle is a group of epics that told the parts of the Trojan story before, between, and after the Iliad and the Odyssey. Only summaries and fragments remain, including the Cypria, Aethiopis, Little Iliad, and Returns.
Is the Contest of Homer and Hesiod a true story?
It is a romance, combining legend and older material. Its date is the age of the emperor Hadrian, though it draws on an earlier version. It shows how ancient readers imagined the two poets and compared their themes of war and farming.
