A stranger's tale sparks a dream
Heinrich is a young man, restless in his bed at night. A stranger's tale spoke of a strange blue flower. Heinrich cannot say why the idea moves him so deeply.
He falls asleep and dreams. He walks through a forest, then reaches a cave, and then a quiet place with a spring. There he sees the blue flower itself. As he is about to approach it, the petals open and a girl's face appears among them. Then the dream dissolves, and he wakes full of happiness.
His father is a practical craftsman. Dreams are only foam, he says, yet he admits that he too once had a strange dream in his youth. This small exchange sets out the central tension of the book. One generation trusts what can be measured and earned. The other listens to inner signs. Soon his mother proposes a journey to her old home in Augsburg. The quest begins not as a mission with a target but as a feeling that pulls the hero forward.
