The story opens in a New York mansion on Riverside Drive. Francis Morgan, heir to his father's millions, lounges in his library and worries only about getting soft. He tells nervous friends to hold on to their shares in Tampico Petroleum, a Mexican oil company that holds most of his fortune.
What he does not know is that Thomas Regan, an old partner of his father, is quietly buying those shares and spreading doubt. He pays a visitor named Alvarez Torres to tell Francis of the buried treasure of Sir Henry Morgan, the buccaneer ancestor, then pretends to scoff at the tale.
Francis studies the old charts and takes a train south that same night. Regan never forces him. He only pushes him the way he already wants to go.
A man who has never had to fight for anything is the easiest man to send away.
