Worum es in diesem Buch geht
Imagine you are broke and need a loan. You know you cannot repay it, but a firm promise would get you the money. Is it wrong to promise anyway? Most of us weigh the risk of being caught. Immanuel Kant says that is the wrong question.
Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysic of Morals is a short book that Kant published in 1785. He seeks one supreme principle of morality, free of habit, feeling or taste. He starts from what ordinary people believe, climbs to a single law of reason, and asks what makes it possible.

Punkt 1 von 9
Only a good will is good without condition
Kant opens with a bold claim. Nothing in the world is good without qualification except a good will. Wit, judgment, courage and perseverance are useful, but each can serve bad ends if the will directing it is bad.
The same goes for power, wealth and even health, which can breed pride when no good will guides them. A will is good not by what it achieves but simply in its willing. Kant compares it to a jewel that shines by its own light. Even if bad luck left such a will powerless, it would keep its full worth.
If nature meant reason to make us happy, it chose a poor tool, since instinct secures comfort far better. Reason has a higher job, which is to cultivate a will whose goodness does not depend on results. Success and charm are not the measure of character.
The takeaway is that a good will, not talent, luck or happiness, is the one thing good without condition.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysic of Morals
What is Kant's Groundwork of the Metaphysic of Morals about?
It searches for the supreme principle of morality. Kant argues that moral worth lies in acting from duty, states the categorical imperative in three forms, and finishes by asking how freedom makes such a law possible for rational beings.
What is the categorical imperative in simple terms?
It is an unconditional command of reason. In its first form it says to act only on a rule you could will to become a universal law, a test that asks whether everyone could follow your rule.
What is the difference between a hypothetical and a categorical imperative?
A hypothetical imperative says what to do if you want a certain goal, such as health or money. A categorical imperative commands an action as right in itself, whatever you want, and so binds without condition.
What does Kant mean by a good will?
A good will is a will that acts from duty and respect for the moral law, not from desire or hope of reward. Kant calls it the only thing good without qualification, valuable even when it achieves nothing.
Is this book easy to follow for a first-time reader of philosophy?
Kant builds the argument from everyday cases, such as the shopkeeper, the false promise and the person who refuses to help. Each of the three sections has a clear aim stated in the preface, so you can follow the path step by step.
