Claire Boltwood fights the Minnesota mud
Free Air opens with Claire Boltwood wrestling a car through prairie gumbo, a mud as thick as glue. She is twenty-three and lives in Brooklyn Heights, and she drives a French roadster called a Gomez-Deperdussin. Her father, worn out by overwork, sits beside her, because his doctor ordered rest and she talked him into driving to Seattle.
The mud wins. Her car drops into a hole beside a cornfield, and a farmer named Adolph Zolzac asks four dollars to pull it out. He breaks his own harness and raises the price. Then a young man in a tin-covered Teal bug arrives, scares Zolzac off by calling himself a deputy sheriff, and tows her free.
He cooks bacon and eggs on a tiny stove and introduces his cat, Vere de Vere. His name is Milt Daggett, and he is also bound for Seattle. Claire learns her first lesson here: the road is hard, but strangers on it will help if she lets them.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
