Worum es in diesem Buch geht
What would you do with two hundred candles? Ten-year-old Polly Pepper knows. She would light every one at once, just for a single bright night, in a kitchen where even a snapped thread counts as a loss. Her mother answers that people who burn all their candles in one night have none for the rest of the year. Then she says she is rich already when she looks around the table at her children.
Margaret Sidney wrote Five Little Peppers and How They Grew for young readers, and it first appeared in the 1880s. It follows a widow, Mrs. Pepper, and her five children in the little brown house in Badgertown, from a birthday surprise to a journey to the city.

Two hundred candles in a dim kitchen
The story opens in the old kitchen of the little brown house, at the end of a busy day. Mrs. Pepper has stitched coats and mended clothes ever since her husband died. Money runs short every winter, and the rent never waits. The five children are Ben, Polly, Joel, Davie and little Phronsie. Each of them wants only to help Mother.
Polly sits by the window pulling basting threads from a finished coat. She snaps one, and her mother reminds her that thread is expensive now. Polly bursts out that she wishes for candles, two hundred of them, all lit at once. Davie sighs that it would be just like heaven, and Phronsie wants to know whether the candles would ever go out.
Mrs. Pepper answers with plain sense. People who light all their candles in a night go without for the rest of the year. Yet she is never gloomy. When Ben wishes the family were rich in time for her birthday, she says that looking around at her five is enough. All she asks is that they stick together and grow up good.
The children wish out loud, the mother keeps them honest, and love fills the gaps that money cannot. That evening Polly and Ben whisper in a corner and plan a birthday celebration.
A family's wealth shows in how it treats one another, not in what is in the cupboard.
