Für wen es gedacht ist

For readers who love short tales with a point, parents reading aloud, teachers, and anyone curious about Russian village life, animals, nature and the moral stories Tolstoy wrote for ordinary people.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

A hungry grasshopper begs the ants for food, and a fox decides the grapes she cannot reach are sour. Leo Tolstoy opens this volume with tiny fables, then moves on to hunting tales, a captive in the Caucasus, lessons on magnets and silkworms, and parables of forgiveness. The short tales sit alongside novel fragments and an essay on education. You meet animals, soldiers, shoemakers, pilgrims and a peasant called Iván the Fool. First, the fables, where one small scene carries a whole lesson.

Punkt 1 von 9

Short fables teach a lesson in one scene

The fables vary in length and often end on a sharp picture.

A lion laughs when a mouse promises him a favor, yet later hunters tie him to a tree. A boy keeps frightening the peasants by pretending that a wolf is near. In the Indian tales, a king asks blind men to examine his elephants by touch. A heron promises to carry fishes to a safer pond, while an old crab watches her.

Patterns appear quickly. A man wants more gold from his marvelous hen, and an olive tree boasts of being stronger than the reeds. Look for small details too, such as the fox who calls the grapes sour. These stories work well aloud, because a child can retell each one after a single hearing.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
