Für wen es gedacht ist

For readers of Wuthering Heights who want to meet the person behind it, and for anyone curious about the Brontë family, the Haworth moors or Victorian literary biography.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

Emily Brontë wrote one novel, Wuthering Heights, and a small body of poems, and then died young. Her life was so private that for decades readers knew her mostly through her sister Charlotte's few remarks. A. Mary F. Robinson, a young English poet and scholar, set out to give her a fuller portrait. Her biography appeared in 1883 as part of a series on eminent women.

Robinson looks at the Yorkshire parsonage, the moors, the family and the habits of a woman who shunned notice. She also tries to explain how such a fierce book came from so quiet a life. In the next few minutes you will follow Emily from childhood to her early death, and see how Robinson reads her character. Let us begin with the house at Haworth.

A childhood in the Haworth parsonage

Emily Brontë was born in 1818 and grew up at Haworth, a stone village on the Yorkshire moors. Her father, Patrick Brontë, was the clergyman there. After her mother died, her aunt Branwell came to help raise the children. Robinson presents a household that was close, bookish and cut off from much of the world around it.

The children had a sister or two who died young, and that loss hangs over the family story. Those who lived on were Charlotte, Branwell, Emily and Anne. They read, wrote and made up stories together. Robinson pays attention to how early the habit of invention began.

The moor matters most in her account. Emily walked it often, knew its weather and its animals, and seemed to draw strength from it. Robinson treats the landscape as part of her character, not just a backdrop. If you know Wuthering Heights, you will see why she does.
