Für wen es gedacht ist

Readers who love dialogue-driven comedy, Jewish New York at the turn of the century, and underdog stories where cleverness and warmth win the day. It suits anyone who enjoys a good argument between old friends.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

Elkan Lubliner, American is a comic novel by Montague Glass, who wrote humorous stories about New York's garment trade in the early twentieth century. It follows a Jewish immigrant boy from Russia who lands on the Lower East Side, goes to work in a cloak and suit factory, and rises to a partnership with the help of his wits, his fists and his kind heart.

The book is built as a string of episodes, each a small comedy of business, family and love. Most of the talk comes from two bickering partners, Marcus Polatkin and Philip Scheikowitz, who shout at each other, scheme behind each other's backs and secretly adore the boy they call their own. Glass gives them a dialect full of Yiddish words, and the jokes land best when you hear them spoken.

In this summary you will meet the boy on the dock at Ellis Island, watch him invent a career as a salesman in a single afternoon, follow a runaway matchmaking plot, and see how he handles rivals, real estate men and a lonely rich buyer. First, the strange arrival that begins it all.

A boy arrives with the wrong name

The story opens in a showroom where Marcus Polatkin and Philip Scheikowitz are arguing over a letter from Russia. Philip's brother-in-law Borrochson writes that he fears for his life and wants passage money for himself and his son Yosel. Marcus sneers at the idea, since he claims every lazy relative has a rabbi for a grandfather. Philip sends the tickets anyway. He first figures the cost of the trip for two on the back of an envelope, and a thousand dollar order arrives in the mail that same morning.

On the day of arrival the partners go together to Ellis Island, and Marcus spends the trip planning the newcomers' future. Only a fifteen-year-old boy comes through the gate, hauling a huge bundle. He says his father stayed behind in Minsk. Borrochson sold the ticket and spent the money on his wedding to a landlord's widow.

The boy weeps, and both men soften. Philip takes him to buy a gray suit and a hot meal. He teaches him English with a mix of four methods, one of which is a smack on the head, as Marcus once received it.

The boy is soon called Joseph Borrochson. He works for three dollars a week and, within a year, speaks like his employers.

He also saves a hundred dollars and tries to hand it to Philip for his keep. Philip is moved and decides to put the money in the bank with a hundred of his own. That is the first sign of how much these loud men care about him.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
