For readers who love myths, fairy tales and early storytelling, and anyone curious about daily belief in ancient Egypt. These tales offer fate, magic, loyal friends and clever plans.
Worum es in diesem Buch geht
Imagine a story told three thousand years ago, copied by a scribe onto a papyrus roll, and read again today. That is what W. M. Flinders Petrie offers in the Second Series of his Egyptian Tales. The tales come mostly from the XVIIIth and XIXth Dynasties, the age of great warrior kings and Ramesses II. Inside you meet a prince with a fate announced at birth, two brothers split by a quarrel, a general with a trick, and a prince who enters a tomb after a book of magic.

Scribes wrote these tales on papyrus
The tales come from papyrus rolls kept by scribes, the trained writers of ancient Egypt. Some rolls carry the copyist's name. The best known is the D'Orbiney papyrus, whose copyist names himself Anena.
Petrie was better known for digging up Egyptian sites. Here he turns to the written word and gives the tales in plain English for general readers. They are closer to folk tale than history. Gods walk among people, animals speak, and magic is as natural as farming.
Some rolls are damaged, and a tale may break off where the papyrus is lost.

What is Egyptian Tales Second Series about?
It is a collection of ancient Egyptian stories translated from papyri, mostly from the XVIIIth and XIXth Dynasties. The tales deal with fate, magic, loyalty, war and the dead, and include the Doomed Prince and the Tale of the Two Brothers.
Who are Anpu and Bata?
They are the two brothers of the Tale of the Two Brothers. Anpu is the elder, a landowner, and Bata is the younger, a strong worker.
Are these Egyptian tales true stories?
No, they are folk tales and adventure stories, though some mention real kings such as Thutmose III and Ramesses II. They were written on papyrus by scribes in the New Kingdom and later.
Why does the Doomed Prince tale have no clear ending?
The papyrus that holds it, known as Papyrus Harris 500, is damaged, and the final part is lost. The story breaks off during the prince's encounter with the crocodile, so modern readers can only guess how it ended.
Is Egyptian Tales hard to read?
No. The tales are short, direct and built on simple actions. The plots are easy to follow.
