Worum es in diesem Buch geht

Everyone in New York is talking about one marriage, and Dinah Avery has barely stepped off the ship. East of Eden by Isa Glenn is a novel of Manhattan at the end of the 1920s. Dinah, a novelist, returns from two years in France to find her literary friends buzzing about Eva Litchfield, a delicate writer, and her husband Nicholas Van Suydam, an architect from an old family. The title comes from Genesis and asks what happens to those who leave their native soil to chase a gift. Dinah wants the truth, even as she dislikes her own curiosity.

Punkt 1 von 9

A returning novelist walks into gossip

Dinah Avery steps off a ship after two years in France and feels sorry to be back. Molly Underhill, a gushing poet, phones at once and promises to tell everything in the taxi. Within a day Dinah's calendar fills with lunches and cocktail hours, each one arranged to discuss Eva Litchfield's married life.

Dinah studies her own curiosity with some distaste. She remembers a hotel tea where Eva and Nicholas slip away to a quiet room. Then an elderly woman in black appears at the top of the stairs. She is Mrs. Schuyler Van Suydam, and she says she has come to get her son.

The writers stare at her openly, since writers stare at anyone who might become a character. Dinah leaves before the scene is over. She has missed the very thing all her friends know.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about Jenseits von Eden

What is East of Eden by Isa Glenn about?

It is a novel about the marriage of the novelist Eva Litchfield and the architect Nicholas Van Suydam in late 1920s New York, told by their friend Dinah Avery, who hears every side of the story from the city's writers and old families.

Is this the same East of Eden as the one by John Steinbeck?

No. This is a separate novel by Isa Glenn, set among New York writers and artists from 1928 onward. It shares only a title that points to Genesis, and its subject is a marriage, a city and a talent.

Why is the novel called East of Eden?

The title comes from the Genesis passage printed at the start, where the first man is sent out of the garden to work the ground. Dinah applies it to writers who leave their home soil and cannot take root in Manhattan.

Who is Dinah Avery in the story?

Dinah is a novelist who returns to New York after two years in France. She tells the story, hears gossip from every friend, and tries to judge Eva and Nicholas fairly while admitting that her own curiosity is part of the trouble.

Is East of Eden worth reading today?

Readers who like witty dialogue, portraits of writers and a close look at one marriage will find it rewarding. The scenes are short and lively, and the New York setting, from carriages to steel towers, is vivid.
